is this what adventuring is? changing our peripheral geography and in the change of patterns that hang over space and time reformulating and uplifting whatever landscape we wander within. there are only so many ways, i suppose that we can know the labyrinth that is the human heart and its unpredictable dialogue with reality- and in our unknowing try our best not to choke on the mystery we swallow with the rest. and you have been with that mystery, it seems, in your midwestland cityscape, approaching from all angles this multifaceted fascination with life.
Profound gratitude for the world is baffling at times, I feel, for i often wish to direct it at a perfect being, consolidated in one body, only to find they are human just like me and the appropriate object of my affection eludes me. But that's just it, isn't it? it is the condensed package that we wander this planet in that forces us to step beyond the bounds of comfort if we wish to see a greater picture even as pieces of it are reflected in each others eyes; we wish those refractions of reality were the extent of the answer but always there is an unspoken ellipsis that is in fact necessary for understanding. when in doubt, thank all beings.
I've been biking to work since my car is dead from another wisco winter and I've no intention of resuscitating it when it would need a gasoline IV that would run $4.09/gal. the bike is a pretty amazing way to get around these country roads - i've even committed to wearing my helmet since you never know what these motorists will do next. Also, I the wind in my hair can no longer balance the scales of feeling like a poor role model for - of all things - kids. where did this surge of good citizenry spring from - and why so pointed at the next gen? Perhaps after a winter of reading the news there are some few things I want to make part of my daily life to reaffirm the potential for integrity of our species or otherwise fold to the paralysis that comes with seeing only incommensurate responses when looking at my own hands. hope is not an incommensurate response. But the bike takes the fast out of the fast lane of this life - good except that i always get hungry during the commute. when i go to the bakery for the day it's no problem to eat a bite here and there but at the Inn i get an actual break so I decided to start bringing actual lunch (yeah, I know, brilliant thought after working there for 5 years but the learning curve is there, right?). so here is a recipe for snackies to fuel the two-wheeled adventuring:
handwiches (the unoriginal)
dough:
(from the Moosewood cookbook)
* soften together 1.5tsp dry yeast, 1T honey, 1c wrist-temp water (it will get a little foamy on top after a few minutes)
* add 1.5tsp salt, 2.5-3 cups flour (i used all whole wheat)
* knead 10-15 minutes , cover, and set in a warm place to rise until double in bulk (1hour). punch down, divide into 6 sections and roll out in rounds 1/4in thick. fill with .5 - .75 c filling, placing filling and sauce in one half of the circle of dough leaving .5in rim. moisten the rim with water, fold empty side over and crimp edge with your favorite fork. prick it here and there and bake on oiled tray at 450* for 15-20 min, until crisp and lightly browned. brush each pastry with a little butter as it emerges.
sauce:
* mix equal parts sour cream and mayo (use something without sugar added like Safflower Mayo)
* season with salt, crushed tarragon, white pepper, hot pepper flakes or whatever you desire
filling:
* saute veggies like onions, seasonal asparagus from the neighbors, garlic, spinach, broccoli
* mix with beans and rice
* sprinkle on some grated cheese
*allow to cool before storing or they may get soggy from condensation.
